1981 Who concert at RockPalast (Germany) ... radio archive replay

My good friend from the same "unrelated fan site" sent me another pointer tonight to a *concert* replayed on the BBC music archive.

PW sounds wild and wacky! Frenetic!

It's a WICKED show.

Here's the track listing:

Baba O' Riley
Quiet One
Behind Blue Eyes
Pinball Wizzard
Who Are You
My Generation
You Better You Bet
Don't Let Go The Coat
Won't Get Fooled Again
Twist And Shout
See Me, Feel Me

I think this'll only be up for a couple more days so enjoy IT will it lasts. (rather than just "enjoy")

P.S. After the show, the DJ plays McCartney's "Angry" which Pete played guitar on. :-) (This was the first time I've ever heard it.)

oooh, how do your record it??! contact me!

(it IS an awesome show)

It's funny...The guy at the introducing at the beginning says it's not a very good recording. I've got it running throughmy system and with some proper EQ it sounds pretty damn good. It's got a nice level mix to it. John is loud and clear for sure. DUH!

I just wish Pete would go back to playing like he played back then. He seems to have gotten really sloppy (at least on the electric) in the last 8-10 years. Am I the only one who feels this way? I'd be interested to know all your opinions.

How do I record it? I've got a really simple program that a friend linked me to. I'll try and find the link and I'll E-mail it to you Lucy. And if worst comes to worst...I'll just mail you a copy of the CD I make.

Aw that's sweet, thanks Rob.

Um, yeah -- I totally agree with you about that DJ. I thought the recording came through with excellent sound as well.

Was that John singing Twist and Shout? Sounded like he struggled with the lead a bit. Anyway, it was an interesting mix of songs! I love hearing The Who do songs we normally associate with the Beatles or Stones. so cool!

I haven't got to Twist and Shout yet. Well actually now I have. Let's see who's singing. Yeah, it's John. He sang it on the first Farewell tour I remember so it makes sense that he's singing it here too. And yes, his voice is pretty rough on the ears. Let's face it, his best vocals are backing vocals. Kind of like Michael Anthony.

Well one more tune and then I'll look for that link. I figured I'd better wait 'til I finish recording, otherwise I'll click on something with some pop up crap with audio and it'll ruin my whole recording. I hate when that happens and it happens to me all the time. LOL!

Sorry, can't really comment on the Pete guitar playing bit, as I'm not the expert there. I think his playing used to be faster though, which would be a perfectly reasonable expectation for a younger guy.

You're the guitar expert! (esp. as far as concerns electric lead)

Tell me what you think of the McCartney song with Pete on guitar. Or maybe you already know it.

Wasn't this the song that Paul thanked Pete for with the gold cuff links (auctioned off on eBay?)
:-)

Isn't the Who Are You wicked? Sounds so sloppy and gorgeous! the rhythm in that song always reminded me of a horse galloping.

Lucy...I haven't been able to find the link yet. I'll have to ask my Phil Hendrie chatroom friend later tonite. He hooked me up with it originally.

As for the McCartney tune, I didn't hear it. I cut the thing off too early I guess. I'll have to go back and listen.

And Who are You...Always sounds killer, except sometimes I've heard some versions where the backing vocals were a little off.
This version sounded pretty tight though. It's a great tune.

I'll try and get the link tonite...I'll be back!!!

Ok Lucy:
This should be the link to the free recording software. Just click where it says:
download now Audio Recorder for Free
at the top of the page. Hopefully it will work. If it's the one I have which is super basic, it should be pretty straight forward to use. If you have any problems let me know.

Hi everyone! Where's everyone been this week. You all have lives or something? LOL! Anyway, I didn't know a better place to post this than here, so here goes. Not 1981 Rockpalast related but definitely Who related.

I'm just getting around to watching a Who DVD I got last week. Maybe you all already have it. It's the Live in Boston DVD from the first tour without John (I'm guessing). There's no date to be found on it but it appears to be from that tour. I'm 99% sure. Anyway, I know I've occassionally been critical of Pete's guitar playing (electric not acoustic) in recent years, but I swear to God, he played amazing this particular night. I'm getting shivers up my friggin' spine. What's funny is that I work with a guy who worked some shows on this tour and he had said he'd never heard Pete sound so good. He told me that on one occassion, he was crouching behind Pete's Fender stack for almost the entire show. How cool must that have been? He said it sounded f-ing awesome (I'm trying not to curse in case Aaron Jr. reads this). Anyhow, I imagine he probably had some serious ringing in his ears for a week or so though! lol!

Bottom line...pick up this DVD if you don't already have it. It is really, really, the best.

Lucy said...

hey, that's cool, Rob. Hey this isn't the "bonus" you're sending me, is it? (wink, wink)

But I'll take Phil Hendrie! I promise I will. ;-)

You're too nice.

ROB said...

No Lucy...Sorry I hadn't thought of copying the Who DVD for you. I'm pretty opposed to doing that sort of stuff anyhow. Especally to The Who. Besides my DVD recorder is a piece of crap. I hate it. I've had 4 different ones and they are all unreliable. You'd think they'd perfect the technology before putting out a product.

You'll like the Phil CD I sent, I promise. And I don't feel guilty about copying Phil's stuff since it's downloadable from his website which I pay $6.95/month to be a member of. If I added up how much I've paid to that website it would be in the hundreds now for sure. Best $6.95/month I've ever spent though:)

Does this sound familiar, Rob? (fun link, ain't it? The McSweeneys. I just discovered it today.)

Man, you sure are dedicated to Phil!

ROB said...

Yes Lucy...It does sound familiar. And that was only a DVD Player. The recorders are even worse (at least the one's I've bought are).
One thing I learned right early on is this: Don't ever erase any videotapes that you may have transferred to DVD because you'll go to play the DVD and it will say "Disc error" and then you're screwed. I've lost a few great things due to this and it's enough to make you want to kill somebody. I've given up on DVD recorders for now completely and gone back to my VCR. At least it's reliable!

Well, ..just a geusstimate but in my humble opinion I think that everybody is congregating on the other of the grid and all other focus has been put by the wayside. At the moment I do not get to "see" that otherside on thewho.com but am figuring that that is certainly what is going on.

ROB said...

Could be Sidney.
I have been on the "other side of the grid" as you say and personally, I'd much rather hang out in this cozy little place with all of you people. That forum (like all forums) is just too big and there's just too much stuff and too many people to sift through for my taste.

Don't feel like you're missing anything over there Sidney because you're not.
Maybe everyone's just kind of busy with other stuff right. Even I am and that rarely happens.

Interesting Rob....that is EXACTLY what WF over at Odds n Sodds is saying...he says it is mental there and a bit unfocused. I hope this little corner does not go stale. I enjoy everybody here and it would be a pity to wrap up and sell up...so to speak.
